Student Scholarships

Our Section is fortunate to have many colleges and universities offering programs related to building design and technologies.  In keeping with the IES mission, our section wishes to encourage education in lighting and offers scholarships for students interested in pursuing lighting or related fields.  Our scholarships have taken the form of submitted applications and/or design competitions.

Scholarships are distributed from an education fund generated by proceeds of our golf outing; however, at times we have also received sponsorship support from local businesses sharing a commitment to education.  If your organization is interested in exploring the idea of such an arrangement, please contact any of our officers.

We encourage all students and educators to contact us to learn more about our scholarship opportunities.  We will post details of scholarship opportunities on this page as they become available.

Student Scholarship Design Competition 2014-2015

The details for this year's Student Scholarship Design Competition have been finalized.

The Theme: MOTION

Purpose/Challenge:

To design an electric powered luminaire that incorporates motion as a theme. Motion may be expressed as actual moving parts of the fixture housing. the light source. or the optics. It may invoke the idea of motion with no moving parts. If the fixture moves as a whole. it must do so in a self-controlled. self-contained manner. Dimming. flashing. and color changing are thought of as movement with respect to light. but this theme pays respect to physical motion. The light source must be powered by electricity. There is no restriction on lamp type. wattage or voltage. The objective is to design an aesthetically pleasing and functional luminaire.

Subject of Design:

The luminaire should be able to be used in an architectural space. It should be a single fixture, not a large or complex installation. The mounting can range from ceiling mount, recessed, pendant, wall mount or be a portable fixture.

Jury:

All submissions will be judged by a multidisciplinary panel of experts in the fields of lighting design, luminaire design, architecture and/or engineering and manufacturing/marketing.

All Criteria and Submission requirements and entry form can be found in here.
